Our mission from the start was to simply build a better home. A home that can weather the elements, and provide safety and security from threats or toxins for multiple generations.
It is our principle belief that a home should be a reflection of the occupants, and provide a safe place of healing comfort and rejuvenation. With materials such as hemp, lime, magnesium, sand and clay, it is possible to live in a healthy symbiosis with nature.
Hempcrete bio-materials are sourced from the waste streams of the industrial hemp plant (the Woody core of the hemp stalk). This is a low impact crop that is grown throughout North America mainly for its seed, and (outer) bast fibre.
Hemp sequesters carbon while growing in the field. In fact, it sequesters MORE carbon in the fields, than is discharged during processing, and hempcrete continues to trap carbon during its wall life. Hempcrete has excellent moisture handling resistance, has non-toxic, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial properties. It is fire resistant & earthquake resistant, it provides an excellent sound break, & has good structural qualities.
A hempcrete home retains heat & performs much differently than a conventionally built home. Its been best described as having thermal qualities more similar to a well built log, or straw-bale home. The heat energy that is introduced into the environment, is absorbed by the thermal mass of the wall and radiated back into the living space. The unique thermal properties of hempcrete allows the environment to remain very cool in the summer heat, and cozy warm in the winter months.
Hempcrete has a thermal R value of between 2-3 per wall inch (depending on binders) and has an average depth of 11 inches. The unique material will wick humidity from the environment, tolerating up to 95% of its weight in moisture without threatening safety, or performance, Over time, the lime binder that is common in hempcrete naturally wants to revert back to its stone form, However, hemp being the second strongest naturally occuring bio-fibre on the planet has other plans.... After 35-40 years, (depending on climate zones) the two materials will settle on petrification.
People often think that hempcrete is a new technology. This couldn't be farther from the truth. Industrial hemp is actually one of the first crops ever sowed by human civilization, There are still hempcrete buildings that stand from the Roman era, and the Great wall of China is built with a material very similar. With a well built foundation, & as long as a hempcrete building has a roof, one could expect it to last multiple generations.
this is not new.... its re-exploring what is tried, tested, and true.
....& almost forgotten
In short, Hempcrete offers hope. its a carbon negative building material, that offers security from fire, mould, rot, & earthquakes, Hempcrete provides an excellent thermal mass, and a safe, comfortable living environment. It reduces the pressure on global aggregate and timber supply, and can be spread on farmland, (post wall life) to re-nourish the soil.
From precast building elements to cast on site, the 8th fire is a leader in hemp building technology in north America.
